Bob Metcalfe

Bob Metcalfe is an engineer and entrepreneur who invented Ethernet, the networking technology that became the foundation of modern local area networking and a cornerstone of the internet's physical infrastructure. He co-invented Ethernet at Xerox PARC in 1973, later co-founded 3Com Corporation, and has been one of the most influential advocates for internet development and technology entrepreneurship over several decades. His connection to Massachusetts runs through MIT, where he completed his undergraduate work, and through his involvement in the Boston technology community across multiple generations of networking and computing innovation. He was awarded the Turing Award in 2022 for the invention of Ethernet.
